Questions about care in the Shetland Islands

How many care homes are there in the Shetland Islands?

There are 10 care homes in the Shetland Islands registered with the Care Inspectorate, the regulator of care services in Scotland. Between them they have 158 registered places.

How are care homes in the Shetland Islands rated?

3 of the 10 with grades from the Care Inspectorate (30%) have Good, Very good or Excellent as their lowest grade across the key questions graded. Care Inspectorate data as at 31 August 2026. In Scotland, the Care Inspectorate grades each service on a six-point scale, from Excellent to Unsatisfactory, for each key question that applies to its type of service. It gives no overall grade, so we do not show one. We show each grade as the Care Inspectorate publishes it and never turn it into a score of our own.

How do I choose a care home in the Shetland Islands?

Start with the help the person needs now and might need later, and shortlist a few services near the people who will visit. Check each one’s latest Care Inspectorate grades and how old it is, read its latest inspection report, and where you can, visit or meet the team more than once before you decide. Ask what is included in the fees and what happens if needs change. This is general information, not advice.

Who pays for care in the Shetland Islands?

It depends on the person’s needs and finances. Some people pay for all of their own care, some get help from their council, and the NHS pays for some health care. The first step is to ask your local council for a free assessment of care needs: that is the council’s social work service. We do not show prices and this is general information, not advice.

How up to date is this information?

This page uses Care Inspectorate data as at 31 August 2026. We check for new data from the regulator every day, and each service page shows the date of the data it uses.

Choosing care homes

A care home is a place to live where staff help with things like washing, dressing, eating and taking medicines, day and night. In Scotland all care homes are registered as one kind of service, and the Care Inspectorate does not say which of them have nurses, so ask each home what nursing it provides.

Things to check

  • Visit more than once, at different times of day, and ask to see where meals are served.
  • Ask how many staff are on duty at night, and how often agency staff are used.
  • Ask what is included in the weekly fee and what costs extra, and how often fees can change.
  • Read the latest Care Inspectorate report, not only the rating, and ask the manager about anything it raises.

Whoever ends up paying, you can ask your council’s adult social care team for a free assessment of what help you need. Our guide explains what to expect and what to ask.
