Privacy policy

Quexo Limited is the controller of personal data on Care Comparison. We collect as little as we can: no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.

What we collect today

  • Nothing about you just for browsing. You do not need an account to use the site.
  • Server logs. Our web server records your IP address, the page requested and your browser type for security and to keep the site running. We keep them for 14 days. Our legal basis is legitimate interests (security and reliability).
  • Rate limiting. To stop abuse we count requests per IP address for a short time.

Cookies and browser storage

We use only what the site needs to work, so there is no cookie banner.

  • care-comparison-session and XSRF-TOKEN: keep the site secure and working.
  • appearance (a cookie and the same key in local storage): remembers whether you chose light, dark or your device’s setting.
  • cc.shortlist.v1 (local storage): the services you save to your shortlist, kept on your own device so you can come back to them. It is never sent to us, except that the shortlist page sends the service codes in it, with no name or other detail about you, so we can show them. Remove a service, or clear your browser’s site data, to delete it.

A comparison link lists only the services being compared. A postcode you type to see distances is looked up in the same way as a search (see below) and is never added to the link you share.

When you search

  • The postcode or place you type is sent to a postcode lookup service (postcodes.io) to find where it is. It receives only what you typed, nothing that identifies you. We keep the answer (the place and its position, not who asked) for up to 90 days so we do not have to ask again.
  • If you choose “Use my location”, your browser asks you first. Your position is rounded to about 100 metres, put in the address of the search page and used only for that search. We do not store it, but like any page address it appears in our server logs for 14 days.
  • If you open a map (on the search results, or on a service’s page once you scroll near it), your browser fetches map pictures from OpenFreeMap (tiles.openfreemap.org), a free map service that uses no cookies or accounts. Like any website it sees your IP address and which part of the map you are looking at. It is not sent the postcode, place or location you searched for, and your browser tells it only that the request came from carecomparison.org.uk, not which page. The small map on a service’s page is not loaded when your browser asks to save data. The map is drawn by software we host ourselves (MapLibre). The map data is from OpenStreetMap contributors.
  • Your search choices (place, distance and filters) are in the page address so that you can share or return to a search. We do not link them to you.

What is coming

If we add optional accounts, we will collect only your email address (and a name if you choose to give one) and what you save, and we will update this policy first.

Who else handles data

Our hosting provider and Cloudflare handle web traffic on our behalf. OpenFreeMap supplies map pictures, as described above. We use no third-party scripts, fonts or analytics on our pages.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete the personal data we hold about you, to object to how we use it, and to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk). Contact us at [email protected].
