How do I choose a home care service in the Orkney Islands?

Start with the help the person needs now and might need later, and shortlist a few services near the people who will visit. Ask what is included in the fees and what happens if needs change. This is general information, not advice.

Who pays for care in the Orkney Islands?

It depends on the person’s needs and finances. Some people pay for all of their own care, some get help from their council, and the NHS pays for some health care. The first step is to ask your local council for a free assessment of care needs: that is the council’s social work service. We do not show prices and this is general information, not advice.

How up to date is this information?

Choosing home care

Home care (the Care Inspectorate calls it care at home) means carers who visit you at home to help with things like washing, dressing, meals and medicines. You stay in your own home.

Things to check

  • Ask whether you will have the same carers each time, and what happens if one is off sick.
  • Ask how visit times are agreed, and what happens if a carer is running late.
  • Ask how long each visit lasts, and whether travel time is counted in it.
  • Read the latest Care Inspectorate report, and ask how the provider checks that visits happen.

Whoever ends up paying, you can ask your council’s adult social care team for a free assessment of what help you need. Our guide explains what to expect and what to ask.
