• Can I see your latest inspection report and any quality improvement plan?
• What have you changed since the last inspection?
• How do you check the quality of care between inspections?

RQIA does not give ratings

RQIA checks whether a service meets the law and the Department of Health’s minimum care standards. RQIA’s guidance for providers says its inspections look at four areas: Is care safe? Is care effective? Is care compassionate? Is the service well led?

How often RQIA inspects

RQIA says it inspects every nursing home and residential care home at least twice a year. Most inspections are unannounced.

“Areas for improvement” and the quality improvement plan

RQIA’s guidance for providers says that where a service does not fully meet a regulation or a standard, the report lists an “area for improvement”. These are set out in a quality improvement plan (QIP), which shows each area, the regulation or standard it relates to, and the date for it to be done. A report describes what RQIA found on the day. It is not a full review of everything at the service.

RQIA’s reports are on its website. Search by type of service and name. Reports from 1 April 2024 onwards are online. For older reports, you can email [email protected].
