CIW rates each service on themes such as well-being and care and support, and gives no overall rating. CIW has not published ratings for any of them yet. CIW data as at 14 October 2026. In Wales, CIW rates each service on themes, not as a whole: well-being, care and support, environment and leadership and management (the environment theme applies to care homes only). Each theme gets one of four ratings: Excellent, Good, Requires improvement or Requires significant improvement. It gives no overall rating, so we do not show one. Adult placement (Shared Lives) services are not rated. We show each rating as CIW publishes it and never turn it into a score of our own.
Start with the help the person needs now and might need later, and shortlist a few services near the people who will visit. Check each one’s latest CIW grades and how old it is, read its latest inspection report, and where you can, visit or meet the team more than once before you decide. Ask what is included in the fees and what happens if needs change. This is general information, not advice.
It depends on the person’s needs and finances. Some people pay for all of their own care, some get help from their council, and the NHS pays for some health care. The first step is to ask your local council for a free assessment of care needs: that is the council’s adult social care team. We do not show prices and this is general information, not advice.
This page uses CIW data as at 14 October 2026. We check for new data from the regulator every day, and each service page shows the date of the data it uses.
Shared Lives is when an adult who needs support lives with, or regularly stays with, a trained and approved host in their home, and becomes part of the family. It is often used for longer stays, short breaks and day support.
Whoever ends up paying, you can ask your council’s adult social care team for a free assessment of what help you need. Our guide explains what to expect and what to ask.
