How many care homes are there in Belfast?
There are 38 care homes in Belfast registered with the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA), the regulator of health and social care in Northern Ireland. Between them they have 1,046 registered places.
Does RQIA rate care homes in Belfast?

How do I choose a care home in Belfast?
Start with the help the person needs now and might need later, and shortlist a few services near the people who will visit. Check when RQIA last inspected each one, read its latest inspection report, and where you can, visit or meet the team more than once before you decide. Ask what is included in the fees and what happens if needs change. This is general information, not advice.
Who pays for care in Belfast?
It depends on the person’s needs and finances. Some people pay for all of their own care, some get help from their council, and the NHS pays for some health care. The first step is to ask your local council for a free assessment of care needs: that is your local Health and Social Care Trust. We do not show prices and this is general information, not advice.
How up to date is this information?
This page uses RQIA data as at 3 August 2026. We check for new data from the regulator every day, and each service page shows the date of the data it uses.
Choosing care homes
A care home is a place to live where staff help with things like washing, dressing, eating and taking medicines, day and night. Care homes without nursing do not have a nurse on duty.
Things to check
- Visit more than once, at different times of day, and ask to see where meals are served.
- Ask how many staff are on duty at night, and how often agency staff are used.
- Ask what is included in the weekly fee and what costs extra, and how often fees can change.
- Read the latest RQIA report, not only the rating, and ask the manager about anything it raises.
Whoever ends up paying, you can ask your local Health and Social Care Trust for an assessment of what help you need. Our guide explains what to expect and what to ask.
