Choosing shared lives

Shared Lives, which the Care Inspectorate calls adult placement, is when an adult who needs support lives with, or regularly stays with, a trained and approved host in their home, and becomes part of the family. It is often used for longer stays, short breaks and day support.

Things to check

  • Ask how hosts are checked, trained and supported, and how a match is made.
  • Ask for a trial visit or a short stay before you commit.
  • Ask how reviews work and who to contact if things are not going well.
  • Read the latest Care Inspectorate report for the Shared Lives scheme.

Whoever ends up paying, you can ask your council’s adult social care team for a free assessment of what help you need. Our guide explains what to expect and what to ask.
